What is the Subconscious Mind?

Whatever your conscious mind assumes and believes to be true, your subconscious mind will accept and bring to pass. Believe in good fortune, divine guidance, right action, and all the blessings of life.

~ Joseph Murphy

Consider that your subconscious mind is a huge memory bank, and it stores everything that has ever happened to you. Your subconscious mind contains your automatic thought, emotion, and habit generators.

Your subconscious mind is patterned by your conditioned programming. The function of your subconscious mind is to respond to your daily life from your social, ancestral, cultural, religious and familial programming.

Mental and Emotional Homeostasis

Your subconscious mind aims to maintain homeostasis in your mental and emotional realm, just as your nervous system aims to keep your body temperature and your heart rate regular.

Your subconscious mind keeps you thinking and acting in ways that are consistent with your past. It has memorized all your comfort zones, and it works diligently to maintain them. Therefore, stretching beyond your comfort zones by thinking and behaving in new ways can bring up emotional discomfort in the beginning.

Persistent Repetition

The great news is...persistent repetition of new positive thoughts and feelings can change your subconscious mind. With diligence, repeating positive affirmations can reprogram your old thought and emotional patterns. But, in my experience, it takes a LOT of repetition to make a big change.

And, it is helpful to know, that it is common to feel fear and emotional discomfort when making a positive change because every historical negative belief that runs counter to your positive affirmation will come up to be reconciled.

Try This:

Consider saying or writing, "I am fortunate" ten times a day for 30 days. Consciously notice all the ways that you currently feel fortunate and amplify your grateful feelings. Also, observe how your subconscious mind offers up memories of past misfortune in an attempt to return you to homeostasis.

Envision how this 30 day affirmation practice will change your brain for the better. And, after the initial period of discomfort, enjoy the pleasurable waves of gratitude that stream through your body when you feel fortunate. You can purchase my affirmation journal for this process HERE.
